The Ultimate Guide to San Diego’s Alternative Comic-Con Experiences (No Badges Required)
It is happening again, San Diego. The pre Comic-Con buzz starts creeping in the moment July hits the calendar. But for anyone who missed the badge registration window, got stuck in the virtual waiting room, or simply prefers to soak up the fandom energy from the outside, there is an entire weekend of events built for you, no badge needed. And there is no better place to base that weekend than The Dana on Mission Bay, close to every corner of the action yet far enough removed to unwind at a quiet, waterfront resort each night.
An Ideal Location for Your Comic-Con Weekend

The Dana sits right on Mission Bay, just minutes from downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter, and Balboa Park, which puts every corner of this year's badge-free Comic-Con scene within easy reach. A short drive brings you into the middle of the action, and when the crowds and noise of downtown start to wear on you, you can be back at the resort, shoes off, drink in hand, in no time. It is the kind of setup that lets you enjoy the citywide spectacle of Comic-Con week without ever feeling stuck in it.
Kick Off the Weekend Right

Convention weekend unofficially begins on Wednesday, July 22, at 8 p.m. with Ready Party One at Parq Nightclub on Broadway. XLE Productions brings back its annual kickoff bash with music from 80s tribute act The Flux Capacitors, plus cosplay, retro gaming, and pop culture nostalgia for anyone looking to start the weekend in costume. Tickets start at 34 dollars.
The next evening, Thursday, July 23 at 6 p.m., the Manchester Grand Hyatt's Seaport Ballroom hosts the Her Universe Fashion Show, a free couture event built around one of a kind designer creations, with this year's show leaning into DC inspired looks competing for a cash prize.
Free Fun at Petco Park

For daytime energy, head to the Interactive Zone at Petco Park's Lexus Premier Lot, running Thursday, July 23 through Sunday, July 26, completely free to enter. Expect brand activations, games, and celebrity appearances scattered throughout Gallagher Square. On Friday, July 24, Funko throws its beloved annual party there, this year themed Quest for the Grail and built around the sunken city of Atlantis, complete with decor, food, drinks, and special guests, though this one requires a ticket. While you are there, swing by the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck for treats and exclusive merchandise, open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
Art, Costumes, and Community

Animation fans should not miss the Chuck Jones Gallery in Seaport Village, hosting pop-up meet and greets Thursday through Saturday with artists connected to Disney, The Simpsons, and classic Warner Bros. characters, all free to attend. Over at the Manchester Grand Hyatt's Grand Hall CD, the Comic-Con Art Show runs Thursday through Sunday with shifting hours each day, showcasing original work from more than 100 artists available for purchase, also free to browse.
For a family friendly start to the week, Balboa Park's Presidents Way Lawn hosts PAWmicon on Tuesday, July 21 from 4:30 to 7 p.m., a free pet cosplay event benefiting the Helen Woodward Animal Center. And Balboa Park's Comic-Con Museum stays open all week, currently featuring the United States debut of Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder alongside a Lucha Libre exhibit filled with authentic masks and costumes, open Thursday through Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with tickets between 15 and 30 dollars.
Bites and Nightlife
Foodies can start their mornings at Pendry San Diego, where a PopUp Bagels truck and Donut Bar's Provisional counter serve up breakfast and character themed doughnuts all weekend starting at 7 a.m. until they sell out. On Saturday, July 25 from noon to 3 p.m., Nason's Beer Hall celebrates the upcoming Spider-Man film with Tom Holland's nonalcoholic beer brand served in limited edition cans.
Once the sun goes down, the Comic-Con Bar Crawl takes over the Gaslamp Quarter from Friday, July 24 through Sunday, July 26, 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., with check-in at Toro on Fifth Avenue. For 13 to 30 dollars, guests 21 and older get access to more than 20 venues with welcome shots and drink discounts along the way, a fitting way to close out each night of the convention.
