San Diego’s Best Seasonal Souvenir Snaps

By builtbygcommerce

San Diego is a beautiful place to visit at all times of the year, but there’s something extra-special about the yuletide season. The nights are longer, the weather is milder, and everyone you meet is filled with even more good cheer than usual. Even though we’re not surrounded by snow, there are still plenty of ways to capture the holiday spirit here in town. Check out our list of the most festive San Diego holiday photo ops to look forward to this season.

Holiday Lights Displays

Jack Frost may not be nipping at your nose here in Southern California, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know how to decorate for the holidays! There are countless locations all across town where you can snap festive displays of seasonal cheer. From downtown to east county, theme parks to green spaces, up the coast to down the bay, there’s no end of spots to get merry and bright. Here are some of the most popular.

Seasonal Speakeasy Stops

San Diego’s surreptitious sipping spots are a blast to visit whenever you find yourself in town, but the holidays are a particularly good time to hunt them down. Not only are many offering special seasonal drink menus, but their already photogenic environments are decked out in festive finery that makes for even sweeter snaps. Not sure where to start? Check out this list of area pubs with a penchant for getting festive at the holidays.

Ice Skating Rinks

(Photo: @laurenashleymedia)
Although beautiful beaches and warm sunshine may be the first images that spring to mind when you think about San Diego, our fair city has a surprisingly active ice skating scene during the holiday season. So if you’re interested in taking some skating snaps surrounded by palm trees (for a uniquely tropical holiday IG shot your East Coast followers won’t have), head out to the rinks at Skating by the Sea in Coronado, Viejas Casino, Poway Community Park, San Diego Ice Arena, or the Ice Rink at Rady Children’s Hospital.

Belmont Park (1.1 Miles)

(Photo: @belmontparksd)
San Diego’s favorite boardwalk theme park always goes all-out with holiday cheer. Every holiday, Belmont is filled with activities, midway games, and other fun distractions that can easily fill a day’s worth of sun-filled fun. Don’t miss the tiki mini-golf, climbing wall, roller coasters, or sky ropes course! Of course, the extra festive décor during the holidays always makes for some family-friendly photos. Surfin’ Santa always comes by for photos, and the carousel will be decked out in festive finery. So stop in, have fun, and grab some shots! And speaking of shots, if your seasonal plans include a little holiday spirit of the distilled variety, be sure to stop by the nearby Beach House Tequila + Taqueria for a little sippable warmth.

There’s just no better spot to snap a “wish you were here” pic than right here. And after you grab your shot, there’s plenty to do in the area, too — starting with stopping in at next door’s Belching Beaver Brewery for a few pints of local holiday cheer.

What’s New in the San Diego Brewery Scene

By builtbygcommerce

San Diego has more than earned its title of the “Craft Beer Capital of America”. With more than 200 tasting rooms and breweries already open (and plenty more scheduled to open soon), it’s pretty clear that we take our beer pretty seriously around here. Join us in celebrating our local craft beer scene with this guide to the newest San Diego brewery openings, beer gardens, and upcoming beer festivals.

Check Out What’s on Tap at Firefly Eatery & Bar (on-site)

Our own on-site restaurant and bar always features a rotating selection of fantastic local beers, as well as many of your household-name favorites. Locals, visitors and guests are all welcome to stop down and check out what we’ve got on tap anytime! Among our current drafts is .394 Pale Ale from AleSmith Brewing Company, a hoppy pint inspired by legendary San Diego Padre Tony Gwynn, and named for his career-high batting average.

San Diego Brew Festival (June 10)

Friends toasting at Brew Fest

(Photo: @sdbeerfestival)
The San Diego Brew Festival returns for its 12th year on June 10th! Get ready to try more than 200 beers from 70 breweries, sample gourmet-on-the-go grub from a fleet of the city’s best food trucks, rock out to some of San Diego’s best live bands, and much more. The festivities happen at NTC Park at Liberty Station, from noon – 4pm, so it’ll be fun in the sun from the jump.

Societe Brewing (3.8 Miles)

(Photo: @societebrewing)
Societe Brewing opened its first satellite location in San Diego’s historic Old Town neighborhood Fall of last year, offering a deep variety of freshly brewed beers to all who stop in for a sample (those of legal drinking age, of course). Guests are invited to enjoy the vintage décor and comfortable patio while sipping on a lager or blonde ale. Their fruity new Flashback Time IPA is proving particularly popular.

North Park Beer Co.’s flagship location has been located in the heart of the hip North Park community for years- making the announcement of their newest opening quite exciting for local beer aficionados. They recently cut the ribbon on their second tasting room location in Bankers Hill — which has wasted no time cultivating a devoted local following. Stop by to try out their exceptional beers, intriguing art deco aesthetic and house-made food menu today.

This independent brewery is committed to the environment, so you can feel good about diving into their extensive list of offerings. Each uses wholesome ingredients and is crafted with an eye toward community and sustainability. With a variety of IPAs and porters, you’re sure to find something you love! Plus, they’re across the street from Petco Park, so they’re a great place for getting in a little “tailgating” ahead of Padres home games. And speaking of the Padres…

Petco Park (8.5 Miles)

Petco Park

(Photo: @ironfistbrewing)
The home of the San Diego Padres was recently named the #1 stadium in the league for the second year running. We like to think the excellent beer selection is one of the biggest reasons why! Visitors to Petco can sample such essential San Diego sips as the fruity Swingin’ Friar Ale from Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing Company’s Weekend Vibes IPA, and Hodad’s double-hopped hazy, Hesher. We’d also be remiss not to mention that Petco Park will also be the site of several pre-game “BeerFests” — game-day tasting events where attendees can roll up a little early, and sample some renowned local beers prior to the first pitch. What a win/win!

(Photo: @elcidbrewing)
Opened earlier this year in the inviting North Park neighborhood, this veteran-owned brewery (named in honor of a famous goat who served as a naval mascot) is a can’t-miss spot when planning your local beer-tinerary. The wide variety of whimsically-titled brews they serve make it a perfect place for all types of beer lovers. Insider tip: Don’t pass up the La Jefa Strawberry Wheat Ale when you go — it’s the perfect crisp summer refresher.

While here, you’ll also discover several beer-focused restaurants and festivals. If the San Diego brewing scene has a heart, Chula Vista is it.

The Coolest Speakeasies in San Diego

By builtbygcommerce

Nearly a century after the repeal of the Prohibition Era of the 1920’s that gave rise to secret speakeasies (a.k.a. hidden bars), the 2020’s are once again seeing an influx of these surreptitious saloons, alive and thriving here in San Diego! There’s just something exciting about having the secret password to a hidden entrance that others aren’t aware of, isn’t there? So if you’re looking for a couple of clandestine cocktails in “America’s Finest City,” then let’s embark on an undercover overview of the best speakeasies in San Diego.

Le Jardin (7.8 Miles)

absynth being served with a sugar cube

The details surrounding this soon-to-open North Park spot are almost as sub rosa as how to get in. What DO we know? As one might guess from the name, the partially open-air space is set to be distinctly French-inspired, as is the cocktail menu. The focus here will be on absinthe, the notoriously enticing anise-flavored green liqueur that supposedly launched a thousand fever-fueled creative sessions during France’s impressionist art era. Watch this space — we’re not sure when Le Jardin will open, but you’ll want to be there when it does.
4677 30th St, San Diego, CA 92116

The Grass Skirt (3.6 Miles)

Located just minutes from our hotel in nearby Pacific Beach, The Grass Skirt is a popular spot within the city’s Polynesian bar scene. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you enter a space festively fashioned with torches, tiki art, and — of course — hula skirts. The menu is brimming with deceptively potent punches and flaming potions, as well. And in contrast to other San Diego speakeasies, The Grass Skirt has an excellent food menu full of island-style eats. If visiting over the holidays, watch this location transform into “Sippin Santa” for a special tropical twist on Christmas. To get in, check out the freezer of the adjacent poké bar.
910 Grand Ave, San Diego, CA 92109

Captain’s Quarters (Just Opened)

The above-mentioned Grass Skirt has opened up a new concept just adjacent to their original hush-hush hideaway in Pacific Beach. Captain’s Quarters is a swashbuckler’s paradise, with pirate-themed décor, drinks, and attitude. It’s one of the city’s newest clandestine taverns, but given its pedigree, it’s also poised to become one of the most popular. So grab some grog, peer out one of the portholes, and get ready to have your rigging raised. Trying to find the entrance? Check your eyepatch and look at the tile a little more closely.
910 Grand Ave, San Diego, CA 92109 (3.6 miles)

Oculto 477 (3.8 Miles Away)

bartender pouring drinks

(Photo: @oculto477)
On the hunt for a location that’s truly unique? Oculto 477 should be at the top of your list. The name breaks down thusly: oculto — meaning “hidden” — and the number 477 paying homage to the same number of “occupants” of Old Town’s El Campo Santo Cemetery. That makes this the only cemetery-adjacent speakeasy in the world that we know of. A dress code and etiquette code are politely enforced (gentlemen, no baseball hats or flip-flops), and there’s a dedicated mezcal tasting room. The menu is arranged based on the style of cocktail, whether “sippers” or punch bowls. The entrance is hidden inside Tahona. We won’t tell you exactly where, though — in this case, finding it is half the fun. We will tell you to make sure you’ve studied up on the 7 deadly sins beforehand, however.
2414 San Diego Ave, San Diego, CA 92110

False Idol (6.3 Miles Away)

False Idol Tiki Bar

(Photo: @falseidoltiki)
Get down with some more sneaky tiki at False Idol. This hush-hush hideaway is home to more than 200 varieties of rum, as well as a flaming volcano that can “erupt” at any minute (although rumor has it that ordering a “Alkala the Fierce” cocktail can spur the lava gods into action). A grotto, wood carvings, and a waterfall are just a few of the other creative and immersive details here. A walk-in refrigerator in the back of Little Italy’s Craft & Commerce Restaurant may hold a clue.
675 W Beech St, San Diego, CA 92101

Prohibition Lounge (7 Miles Away)

Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the appropriately named Prohibition Lounge is styled as a vintage law office owned by a man by the name of Eddie O’Hare. There’s a distinctly film noir feel about the joint, so fans of Dashiell Hammett and Humphrey Bogart will feel right at home. Once inside, you’ll be immersed in a secret underground location with an old-time ambiance and masterfully crafted cocktails. Eddie O’Hare’s law office on Fifth Avenue has a clandestine entrance.
548 Fifth Avenue San Diego, CA 92101

Noble Experiment (7.4 Miles)

Noble Experiment

(Photo: @nobleexperiment)
On the hunt for an intimate and exclusive bar serving unique libations among a wall of skulls? Noble Experiment — one of the city’s longest-running covert cocktail clubs — is waiting for you. However, when you go, you’ll want to make a reservation WELL in advance. That’s the only way to get a seat in the immaculately appointed space, located inside Neighborhood eatery in East Village. The entrance of the speakeasy is through a wall of empty kegs stacked near the restrooms.
777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101

Young Blood (7.4 Miles)

Young Blood

(Photo: @youngbloodcocktails)
Wait…a speakeasy inside another speakeasy?! That’s exactly what Youngblood is! Hidden inside Noble Experiment, this small space is a glamorous one-room bar with only 30 seats. Admire the stunning decor with attention paid to the smallest of details. Secret Tip: Enter through a faux-refrigerator door just beyond the tiled vestibule.
777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101

Acid Vault (8.3 Miles)

Located inside the equally-worth-the-visit Amplified Ale Works, Acid Vault leans into a trippy, psychedelic vibe. You’ll notice it the moment you enter. Swirling colors, black-light imagery, and plush surfaces blend into each other in a symphony of ‘60s-style vibes. Signature drinks like the “Rebel Dottie” and “Sage Advice” promise insight at the bottom of a glass. Curated music shows from some of the city’s best entertainers complete the ambience. Insider tip: to enter this trippy locale, you’ll need to order a specific drink.
1429 Island Ave, San Diego, CA 92101

Realm of the 52 Remedies (10.5 Miles Away)

Realm of Remedies

(Photo: @52remedies)
Your journey starts in a white room decorated as a futuristic apothecary, inspired by an ancient manuscript of traditional Chinese medicinal recipes. Continuing into the drinking den, guests are led down a portal to the past to find opulent seating, dramatic decorations, and overhead sculptures, all of which further enhance the spectacle created inside The Realm. The four-seat “Emperor’s Bar” inside the Realm of 52 Remedies also offers exclusive access to a collection of premium spirits.
4805 Convoy Street, San Diego, CA 92111

Estancia in Bloom (12.1 Miles)

Developed as a collaboration between Native Poppy florists and Estancia La Jolla, this pop-up pub is billing itself as a “botanical speakeasy”. Not only is the space filled with fragrant flowers of all varieties, but the colorfully curated craft cocktail menu is also infused with plant essences. Estancia in Bloom will be operating out of the property’s Greenfinch Bar from 4-10 daily through the end of the year — at which point it will drift away like petals on the breeze.

One of the year’s most anticipated events returns to San Diego. The Seven Seas Craft Beer & Food Festival is a two-month long celebration featuring lots of local craft brews, live entertainment, in-park events, and (of course) no end of incredible global flavors, all prepared fresh by some of San Diego’s most skilled culinary experts. The best part: it all happens at SeaWorld, one of the city’s best attractions from now through April 30th.

Looking for a classically Southern California day out? You’ll find much to love at Belmont Park. This timeless boardwalk-style waterfront rides-and-games destination is located in picturesque Mission Beach, and features fantastic attractions like the Giant Dipper roller coaster, mini-golf, rock climbing, classic oceanside dining, and more. Plus, Belmont is right on the beach, which is always a great way to spend a spring day around here. And when the sun sets, you shouldn’t miss your chance to stop in for dinner and drinks at Beach House, an excellent eatery right nearby.

Mission Bay’s newest gathering spot is the place to be for fun, events, and a great day at the beach. Start your day with a caffeine kick or fresh-squeezed juice at Superbloom coffee and juice bar. Enjoy a beachfront Yoga session, floral arrangement class, “Mommy & Me” high tea service this Mother’s Day weekend, or lunch with friends. Then head out to the lawn for a game of bocce, grab a fresh ice cream, or just drink in panoramic ocean views from the beach.

8.) Whale Watching (4.5 Miles)

a whale breaching

Thanks to our location adjacent to the seasonal migration route of several whale species, San Diego is one of the most specimen-rich locations in the world when it comes to spotting these majestic creatures in the wild. This means seeing them while they make their way past us is a near-certainty. Several local tour companies offer nautical treks that can get you close enough to spot these amazing animals. We recommend contacting our friends at Next Level Sailing, who offer trips on the yacht America that can get you close.

9.) San Diego Padres at Petco Park (8.4 Miles)

Petco Park

Sports fans are in luck when visiting us here. Our own hometown heroes the San Diego Padres have been bringing big-time baseball to the city for more than 50 years. The Padres’ home of Petco Park is widely recognized as one of the finest stadiums in the league, too. So much so that it was recently named the league’s #1 park for 2022 by USA Today, who called it “the best stadium in baseball.” So grab a seat on a game day!

10.) The Carlsbad Flower Fields (29.4 Miles Away)

The breathtaking Carlsbad Flower Fields draw tens of thousands of visitors to a beautiful super-bloom of giant Tecolote ranunculus flowers every year. Row after row of brilliant rainbow colors ripple across the landscape during the peak months in spring. When visiting, guests are treated to not just the brilliant botanical display, but also a wide range of family-friendly activities — such as antique tractor rides, fruit picking, and more.

San Diego Escapes For Grownups

By builtbygcommerce

In our first post this month, we envisioned what it might look like to let the kids plan a San Diego vacation. We don’t want to neglect the “big kids”, though! So if you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with a friend group, we thought we’d point out some great ways for funseekers of the more grown variety to enjoy a spring break escape to “America’s Finest City.” Read on for some fantastic getaway ideas.

Beach House Bar (1.1 Miles)

One of San Diego’s premier beach bars is located less than a mile from our hotel. Beach House Bar encompasses 30,000 square feet of combo bar, restaurant, and oceanside relaxation. Here, you’ll discover fire pits, entertainment, delicious food and cocktails and endless amounts of SoCal sunshine. You’re also just steps from Belmont Park, San Diego’s boardwalk fun zone where everyone feels like a kid. So if you’re down for hitting the midway or riding the Great Dipper, you’re already here!
3146 Mission Blvd, San Diego, CA 9210

Cannonball and Draft (1.2 Miles)

After visiting Beach House, head out to the boardwalk. Then take a left and walk just a few steps. In moments, you’ll make landfall at a beachfront bar called Draft. And with sushi bar Cannonball located directly upstairs, you’re covered for some of the best food and drinks in the city. Directly overlooking the Mission Beach Boardwalk, Cannonball can lay claim to having the largest beachfront rooftop in the city, with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. They also serve always-fresh sushi, seafood, and fresh California cuisine. So order up, kick back, and enjoy the stunning view. Draft is a wonderful spot to catch a game, grab a beer or just watch the carefree rollerbladers coast on by.

El Prez (2.4 Miles)

If there’s anything better than tacos, tequila and beachside sunsets, we haven’t found it yet. Thankfully, El Prez serves up all three in grand fashion. This festively colorful neighborhood hotspot is a closely-guarded secret among locals. Once you dive into their menu and drink specials, it won’t be tough to see why. So whether you’re looking for a cozy dinner for two or a night out with the crew, you’ll want to make El Prez a stop.

The Grass Skirt (3.4 Miles)

The Grass Skirt

(Photo: @thegrassskirtsd)
As one of the more popular spots within the city’s Polynesian bar scene, The Grass Skirt is a breezy neighborhood speakeasy festively festooned with torches, tiki art, and — of course — hula skirts. The menu is brimming with deceptively potent punches and flaming potions, some of which seem to have a mystic effect on the environment itself when ordered. And in contrast to many of San Diego’s undercover taverns, The Grass Skirt has an excellent food menu full of island-style eats. Secret Tip: Check out the freezer at the adjacent poké bar to make your way inside.
910 Grand Ave, San Diego, CA 92109

Captain’s Quarters (3.4 Miles)

And speaking of speakeasies (sssh!) The Grass Skirt has opened up a new concept just adjacent to their original hush-hush hideaway in Pacific Beach.

Coin-op Game Room (9 Miles)

(Photo: @coinopsd)
“Barcades” are big in San Diego, and they’re exactly what they sound like. Specifically, a big kids’ playground where you can grab a burger, a beer and a handful of quarters and play all night. Classically old-school arcade gaming is always on offer here, as are specialty drinks like the “Kentucky Stucky” and “Guava the Hutt”. You can even order an tipsy pouch drink (just like what used to be in your lunchbox, but for big kids) if you’re feeling, well…punchy. Hungry? Dig into a “Goomba Burger” (with a grilled mushroom cap, natch), or a Shrimpy Boy po’ boy-style sub. Just be sure to wipe the remoulade sauce off of your fingers before you start mashing buttons. San Diego is chock-full of fun bars for the young at heart if you know where to look!

Go Undercover at Oculto 477 (3.7 Miles Away)

Step back in time at Oculto 477. This speakeasy pays its respects to mixologists of the past as well as the 477 nextdoor “neighbors” buried in the adjacent cemetery. Oculto 477 politely enforces dress and etiquette codes making this an upscale and classy San Diego date night option. Just getting in is half the fun — you’ll have to visit a mock confessional to confess your sins in order to enter. Once inside, be sure to order the “Risk it All”, a drink where a literal roll of the dice determines what ends up in your glass.

Take in a Movie at Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero (7.2 Miles Away)

Catch a movie under the stars and city lights at the Rooftop Cinema Club Embarcadero. “Barcades” are growing in popularity nationwide, and San Diego has some amazing examples. Punch Bowl Social is one such fast-growing fun zone. Imagine your well-off buddy’s basement rec room writ large, and you’re approaching the vibe. Similarly, Coin Op Game Room is a North Park staple (which recently opened a second location in the Gaslamp Quarter). It was the first barcade in “America’s Finest City”, and it remains a mandatory stop for anyone on the hunt for beer, burgers, and bytes.
