San Diego’s Favorite Food Trucks

By The Dana

The tempo of life is so fast-paced, it’s no surprise that food trucks have taken off so much in recent years. These mobile meal-makers can pop up in places where a full-size eatery simply wouldn’t be practical, so they make a great option for anyone who wants great food fast. From tacos, to pizza, to classic American comfort food — there’s just no end to the incredible options available, each certain to satisfy any mood or craving no matter where you are in the city. Interested in checking out some of the best food trucks San Diego has to offer? Check out our picks for some can’t-miss options below.

Urbn Pizza (Mobile)

Urban Pizza

(Photo: @urbnpizza)
We can confidently say there’s no food truck in the city quite like URBN Pizza. The folks behind this incredible concept have found a way to turn a traditional wood-fired pizza oven into a mobile operation. And while they don’t necessarily stick to one location, it’s definitely worth following them on Instagram to discover where they’ll be next. Trust us: once you get a taste of what they’re cooking up, you’ll gladly follow them anywhere.

San Diego Beer Fest (4.1 Miles)

(Photo: @doggosgus)
There’s no better place or time to get a sense of San Diego’s food truck culture than at one of the city’s favorite festivals. San Diego Beer Fest (happening June 10th) is a celebration of the brewing culture of “The Craft Beer Capital of America”. In addition to offering amazing beer from some of the city’s best breweries, visitors will also find plenty of fun, live entertainment, and a fleet of the best food trucks in town. Among them: Baja Fish Taco & Burgers, Nava Sausage Company, Drippin’ Kitchen, Hawaiian Fresh Seafood and Big Oven Pizza. You definitely won’t want to miss this amazing culinary experience!

Tacos are the unofficial dish of San Diego, and there are countless places to get your craving satisfied. Still, if you ask a local where the city’s best and freshest Mexican-style meals on wheels are, chances are they’ll point you toward Kiko’s. The fried fish tacos here are among the best in town. However, if you’re feeling adventurous? The spicy octopus tacos are the star of the menu, and the reason why San Diegans keep coming back.
Hazard Center Dr. & Mission Center Rd, San Diego, CA 92108

Underdog (7.4 Miles)

Underdog

(Photo: @underdog.sd)
As you might guess from the name, gourmet hot dogs are the bread n’ butter at this University Heights favorite. And you’d be right — but that’s not the whole story. Everything on the menu here is fresh, hot, delicious, and 100% vegan. So whether you opt for the Banh Mi Dog, the NYC style, or even the Chili Cheese — it’s all equal parts deeply delicious and animal-free. Insider tip: don’t pass up the Kimchi Cheddar Fries.
2404 El Cajon Blvd, San Diego, CA 92104

Some of the best food trucks in the world serve inventive twists on fusion cuisine, and Chef Budda’s is absolutely among their ranks. These purveyors of classic southern-style soul food with a pan-Asian twist have won raves for a menu that’s just as delicious as it is unique. The simple shawarma is a Mediterranean masterpiece. Tender, slow-cooked meats are spiced perfectly, piled high on a pita with tasty toppings, and served up fresh. And there’s no better spot in San Diego to sample it than at The Shawarma Guys truck. Just how good are these fantastic food-truck experts? The Shawarma Guys weren’t just voted the best in the city, nor the best in California. No — they were voted the #1 best restaurant in the COUNTRY on Yelp. So you know you’re in for an experience you’ll never forget.

A Truck Called Noodles (9.2 Miles)

A Truck Called Noodles

(Photo: @atcnoodles)
Pan-Asian fusion is the name of the game at this popular truck, which can be found parked outside the equally-worth-the-visit Thorn Brewing. Although the menu here is ever-evolving, it’s no surprise that most hungry diners roll up for the namesake noodles. You’ll want to try the wings of the day, the Lofu Mein (filled with tasty tofu), or “The Swashbuckled” — Thai-style stir-fried “drunken” noodles with fresh-cut veggies.

By The Dana

Baby, it’s warm outside. Thankfully, “America’s Finest City” offers plenty of great ways to get cool and stay cool. Even better — some of the best of those mercury-managing ideas aren’t just effective, but delicious! If you’re looking to beat the heat and treat your tastebuds at the same time, read on for some of our favorite local San Diego frozen treats, tropical drinks and cool eats that are equal parts tasty and temperature-reducing.

Val’s Coffee Corner’s Brazilian açai Bowls (2.2 Miles)

(Photo: @valscoffeecorner)
There are few spots on the planet more sultry than Brazil — which is why they’ve come up with no end of ways to stay cool there. One of the best? The equal parts tempting and temperature-taming açai bowl. And nobody in San Diego serves this superfood more scrumptiously than our good friends at Val’s Coffee Corner in Ocean Beach. Their take is a smooth, sweet blend of organic açai sorbet, granola, coconut, banana, strawberry, blueberry, honey and chia seeds, and it’s a guaranteed great way to feel good (and eat even better) in even the warmest of weather conditions.

Baked Bear’s Ice Cream Sandwiches (2.7 Miles)

(Photo: @thebakedbear)
Anytime is a good time for ice cream, especially when it’s served as creamy and delicious as the folks here do it up. Baked Bear specializes in over-the-top, no-holds-barred ice cream sandwiches, so you’re only limited by your imagination — and your appetite! In fact, their gooey, cold-packed concoctions are so legendary, they’ve attracted national press — including feature appearances in Forbes, Eater, Thrillist, and many more foodie-first publications. Whether you pick a favorite from their extensive menu or design your own, one thing’s for sure: you won’t leave unsatisfied. Take one to-go and enjoy it beachside — they’re located right along the boardwalk.

Holy Paleta’s “heaven on a Stick” (5.3 Miles)

(Photo: @holypaleta)
For the uninitiated, Paletas are a traditional frozen Mexican treat. Think a next-level popsicle. These family favorites can be made with a variety of ingredients — from fruit, to cookies & cream, nuts, even jalapeños! We highly suggest trying this summer favorite with a visit to Holy Paleta, a local stop offering unique flavors like “Matcha Latte”, “Creamy Passionfruit”, “Toasted S’mores”, and more!

An’s Dry Cleaning’s Award-winning Gelato (7.8 Miles)

(Photo: @ansdrycleaning)
We know what you’re thinking — but don’t be fooled. The sign over the door at An’s may lead you to believe they’re a great place to get that stubborn spot out of your favorite jacket. But they’re actually one of the city’s best gelato spots! The new owners just didn’t want to alter the historic charm of the building after they took it over from the previous establishment. They now offer house made “fabrics” with amazing flavors like “Linen” (a pineapple-basil vegan sorbet), and the popular “Leather” (a brown butter, chocolate chip variety). So, how’s it going? So well that An’s was recently named as the #2 ice cream parlor in the COUNTRY by USA Today. Don’t miss out on their unbeatable sweets, always and only made from the best fresh, local ingredients.

Sip a Smoothie

(Photo: @shakeandwake)
When it’s warm, there are few better ways to nourish the soul and lower the temperature than by sipping on something cool, blended and tasty. Thankfully, San Diego offers some sweet smoothie stops perfect for cooling down. We recommend checking out nearby Shake & Wake in Pacific Beach for organic blends of fresh ingredients as nutritious as they are delicious. Señor Mango’s fruiteria has been a University Heights staple for more than 20 years, offering some of the most affordable and fresh juices, smoothies and fruit salads in town. And you also can’t beat the delectable Dole Whip at Belmont Park!

(Photo: @balihairestaurant)
Polynesian cultures have concocted countless temptingly tropical ways to cool down for generations. And thanks to San Diego’s “melting pot” cultural scene, plenty of these island-inspired refreshments have found their way to our shores. Whether you’re sampling the notoriously potent Mai Tai at Shelter Island’s Bali Hai, speakeasy False Idol’s famous Painkiller, The Royal Fog Cutter at Grass Skirt or the 13 Assassins at Realm of the 52 Remedies, you’re sure to find chill in all senses of the word, while also really taking in those tropical summer vibes.

The Coolest Speakeasies in San Diego

By The Dana

Nearly a century after the repeal of the Prohibition Era of the 1920’s that gave rise to secret speakeasies (a.k.a. hidden bars), the 2020’s are once again seeing an influx of these surreptitious saloons, alive and thriving here in San Diego! There’s just something exciting about having the secret password to a hidden entrance that others aren’t aware of, isn’t there? So if you’re looking for a couple of clandestine cocktails in “America’s Finest City,” then let’s embark on an undercover overview of the best speakeasies in San Diego.

Le Jardin (7.8 Miles)

The details surrounding this soon-to-open North Park spot are almost as sub rosa as how to get in. What DO we know? As one might guess from the name, the partially open-air space is set to be distinctly French-inspired, as is the cocktail menu. The focus here will be on absinthe, the notoriously enticing anise-flavored green liqueur that supposedly launched a thousand fever-fueled creative sessions during France’s impressionist art era. Watch this space — we’re not sure when Le Jardin will open, but you’ll want to be there when it does.

The Grass Skirt (3.6 Miles)

Located just minutes from our hotel in nearby Pacific Beach, The Grass Skirt is a popular spot within the city’s Polynesian bar scene. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you enter a space festively fashioned with torches, tiki art, and — of course — hula skirts. The menu is brimming with deceptively potent punches and flaming potions, as well. And in contrast to other San Diego speakeasies, The Grass Skirt has an excellent food menu full of island-style eats. If visiting over the holidays, watch this location transform into “Sippin Santa” for a special tropical twist on Christmas. To get in, check out the freezer of the adjacent poké bar.

Captain’s Quarters (Just Opened)

The above-mentioned Grass Skirt has opened up a new concept just adjacent to their original hush-hush hideaway in Pacific Beach. Captain’s Quarters is a swashbuckler’s paradise, with pirate-themed décor, drinks, and attitude. It’s one of the city’s newest clandestine taverns, but given its pedigree, it’s also poised to become one of the most popular. So grab some grog, peer out one of the portholes, and get ready to have your rigging raised. Trying to find the entrance? Check your eyepatch and look at the tile a little more closely.

Oculto 477 (3.8 Miles Away)

On the hunt for a location that’s truly unique? Oculto 477 should be at the top of your list. The name breaks down thusly: oculto — meaning “hidden” — and the number 477 paying homage to the same number of “occupants” of Old Town’s El Campo Santo Cemetery. That makes this the only cemetery-adjacent speakeasy in the world that we know of. A dress code and etiquette code are politely enforced (gentlemen, no baseball hats or flip-flops), and there’s a dedicated mezcal tasting room. The menu is arranged based on the style of cocktail, whether “sippers” or punch bowls. The entrance is hidden inside Tahona. We won’t tell you exactly where, though — in this case, finding it is half the fun. We will tell you to make sure you’ve studied up on the 7 deadly sins beforehand, however.

False Idol (6.3 Miles Away)

Get down with some more sneaky tiki at False Idol. This hush-hush hideaway is home to more than 200 varieties of rum, as well as a flaming volcano that can “erupt” at any minute (although rumor has it that ordering a “Alkala the Fierce” cocktail can spur the lava gods into action). A grotto, wood carvings, and a waterfall are just a few of the other creative and immersive details here. A walk-in refrigerator in the back of Little Italy’s Craft & Commerce Restaurant may hold a clue.
675 W Beech St, San Diego, CA 92101

Prohibition Lounge (7 Miles Away)

Located in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter, the appropriately named Prohibition Lounge is styled as a vintage law office owned by a man by the name of Eddie O’Hare. There’s a distinctly film noir feel about the joint, so fans of Dashiell Hammett and Humphrey Bogart will feel right at home. Once inside, you’ll be immersed in a secret underground location with an old-time ambiance and masterfully crafted cocktails. Eddie O’Hare’s law office on Fifth Avenue has a clandestine entrance.

Noble Experiment (7.4 Miles)

Noble Experiment

(Photo: @nobleexperiment)
On the hunt for an intimate and exclusive bar serving unique libations among a wall of skulls? Noble Experiment — one of the city’s longest-running covert cocktail clubs — is waiting for you. However, when you go, you’ll want to make a reservation WELL in advance. That’s the only way to get a seat in the immaculately appointed space, located inside Neighborhood eatery in East Village. The entrance of the speakeasy is through a wall of empty kegs stacked near the restrooms.

Young Blood (7.4 Miles)

Young Blood

Wait…a speakeasy inside another speakeasy?! That’s exactly what Youngblood is! Hidden inside Noble Experiment, this small space is a glamorous one-room bar with only 30 seats. Admire the stunning decor with attention paid to the smallest of details. Secret Tip: Enter through a faux-refrigerator door just beyond the tiled vestibule.
777 G St, San Diego, CA 92101

Acid Vault (8.3 Miles)

Located inside the equally-worth-the-visit Amplified Ale Works, Acid Vault leans into a trippy, psychedelic vibe. You’ll notice it the moment you enter. Swirling colors, black-light imagery, and plush surfaces blend into each other in a symphony of ‘60s-style vibes. Signature drinks like the “Rebel Dottie” and “Sage Advice” promise insight at the bottom of a glass. Curated music shows from some of the city’s best entertainers complete the ambience. Insider tip: to enter this trippy locale, you’ll need to order a specific drink.

Realm of the 52 Remedies (10.5 Miles Away)

Realm of Remedies

(Photo: @52remedies)
Your journey starts in a white room decorated as a futuristic apothecary, inspired by an ancient manuscript of traditional Chinese medicinal recipes. Continuing into the drinking den, guests are led down a portal to the past to find opulent seating, dramatic decorations, and overhead sculptures, all of which further enhance the spectacle created inside The Realm. The four-seat “Emperor’s Bar” inside the Realm of 52 Remedies also offers exclusive access to a collection of premium spirits.
4805 Convoy Street, San Diego, CA 92111

Estancia in Bloom (12.1 Miles)

Developed as a collaboration between Native Poppy florists and Estancia La Jolla, this pop-up pub is billing itself as a “botanical speakeasy”. Not only is the space filled with fragrant flowers of all varieties, but the colorfully curated craft cocktail menu is also infused with plant essences. Estancia in Bloom will be operating out of the property’s Greenfinch Bar from 4-10 daily through the end of the year — at which point it will drift away like petals on the breeze.
